Course description

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services.

These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

Course structure

Total 20 units — 15 core and 5 electives.

Entry requirements

Work placement

Mandatory placement
160 hours

To achieve this qualification, students must complete a minimum of 160 hours of supervised work placement in an approved mental health service. Placement allows students to apply recovery-oriented practice, trauma-informed care, and collaborative service delivery with real clients and care networks. UTI's Work Placement Coordinator will help arrange host organisations and oversee progress against the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

Exit point / award

Students who successfully complete all 20 units of competency and the mandatory 160 hours of work placement will be issued with CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health, recognised nationally under the AQF.

Students who complete some but not all units may be issued with a Statement of Attainment.
