Carpentry apprenticeship in Sydney: a step-by-step guide.

Everything you need to go from interested to indentured — Certificate III enrolment, the White Card, finding a host employer, signing your training contract, and progressing once you qualify.

A carpentry apprenticeship is one of the clearest pathways into a long, well-paid trade career in Sydney. Demand for qualified carpenters across NSW continues to outstrip supply, and the structure of an apprenticeship lets you earn while you learn. This guide walks through the seven steps from your first interest in the trade through to completing Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) at UTI and starting work as a qualified carpenter.

The 7 steps

From first interest to qualified carpenter.

  1. 01

Decide carpentry is right for you

Carpenters in NSW build, install and repair structures in timber and related materials — residential framing, formwork, fit-outs and finishing. The trade rewards problem-solving, accuracy and people who enjoy working with their hands across a variety of sites.

  2. 02

Enrol in Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220)

An apprenticeship is built around a nationally recognised qualification. At UTI you complete CPC30220 — Certificate III in Carpentry — combining workshop training at our North Parramatta campus with on-the-job experience.

  3. 03

    Get your White Card

Before you set foot on a NSW construction site you need a SafeWork NSW General Construction Induction (White Card). It is a short course covering safety basics and is a non-negotiable for any host employer.

  4. 04

    Find a host employer

Most Sydney apprentices are placed through a builder, sub-contractor, or a Group Training Organisation (GTO) that hosts you out to different sites. Apply directly to local builders, use seek.com.au and the NSW Apprenticeships Gateway, and ask UTI trainers for industry referrals.

  5. 05

    Sign your training contract

Your employer and you sign a training contract with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider. The contract formally registers your apprenticeship with Training Services NSW and sets out wages, hours and the qualification you are working toward.

  6. 06

    Complete on-the-job hours and assessments

A full carpentry apprenticeship typically runs 3–4 years. You rotate between paid on-site work and structured training at UTI, with practical assessments demonstrating real competency rather than just classroom knowledge.

  7. 07

    Qualify and progress

Once you finish CPC30220 and your training contract, you are a qualified carpenter. From there you can pursue your Builder's Licence, supervise apprentices, specialise (formwork, shopfitting, heritage) or move into a Diploma of Building and Construction.

Tips from our trainers

Land the spot.
Then keep it.

  • Apply to several builders in parallel — a personal call beats a generic email.
  • Bring proof of your White Card, driver's licence and any prior construction experience to interviews.
  • Be on time, every time — punctuality is the #1 thing host employers screen for.
  • Invest in your own basic tools early — a tape, hammer, square and pencils signal you take the trade seriously.
  • Ask UTI trainers and admin about employers actively looking for apprentices in your intake.
FAQ

Common questions.

How long does a carpentry apprenticeship take in Sydney?
Most NSW carpentry apprenticeships run between 3 and 4 years of combined on-the-job work and training, with competency — not just time served — driving completion.
Do I need a job before I enrol in Certificate III in Carpentry?
Not always. You can begin your training at UTI and use that period to secure a host employer, or enrol once a builder has already signed you on as an apprentice. Talk to our admissions team about the pathway that fits your situation.
How much do carpentry apprentices earn?
Apprentice wages in NSW are set by the relevant Modern Award and rise each year of the apprenticeship. Wages depend on age, year and whether you completed Year 12 — Fair Work Australia's pay calculator gives current rates.
Can international students do a carpentry apprenticeship?
International students on a student visa typically study CPC30220 as a full-time qualification rather than a traditional employer-sponsored apprenticeship. Speak with UTI about CRICOS-registered carpentry study options.
